Billund family guide

Billund is a small Danish town where the LEGO brick was born, and almost everything here is built for families. LEGOLAND, the original park from 1968, fills one or two days, while LEGO House lets children design, build and test their own creations. Around town there are forest play parks, a safari zoo and Viking rune stones, and the airport is a few minutes from the hotels.

Top things to do in Billund with kids

  1. LEGOLAND Billund Ages 3+

Walk through Miniland's famous cities made of millions of bricks, ride pirate boats and coasters, and earn a LEGO driving licence; the park opens roughly late March to early November and closes in winter.

  2. LEGO House Ages 3+

Build fish, cars and whole cities in four colour-coded play zones, see the giant Tree of Creativity and order lunch with bricks at the Mini Chef restaurant; open all year with timed tickets.

  4. Jelling rune stones Ages 5+

The two Viking rune stones and royal burial mounds are a UNESCO site, and the free Kongernes Jelling museum next to them tells their story with interactive displays.

  5. WOW Park Ages 4+

A huge forest play park in Billund with treetop walkways, slides and tunnels to crawl through, open in the summer season and school holidays.

Rainy-day and cold-day options

  • Lalandia Aquadome

Big indoor tropical water park next to LEGOLAND with slides, a wave pool and toddler pools, open all year.

  • Monkey Tonkey Land

Lalandia's indoor play area with climbing frames, ball pits and trampolines for a wet afternoon.

  • Økolariet in Vejle

Hands-on nature and climate centre about 30 minutes away by car, good for curious 6-12-year-olds.

A simple first day

Morning
Arrive at LEGOLAND at opening and head to the far end first while queues are short.
Afternoon
Rest in Miniland and spot model cities, ships and airports in tiny detail.
Evening
Walk to LEGO House to play on its free public square and look up at the giant brick building.

Getting around

Billund is small and walkable between LEGOLAND, LEGO House and the hotels, but a hire car makes Givskud Zoo, Jelling and the coast far easier to reach.

Food kids like

Try a red hot dog from a pølsevogn, frikadeller (Danish meatballs), smørrebrød open sandwiches and, around Christmas, æbleskiver pancake balls; Danes eat lunch around 12:00 and dinner around 18:00.

  • Check ride height limits before queuing so younger siblings are not disappointed at the gate.
  • Jutland weather is windy and changeable even in summer, so carry a rain jacket and sun cream on the same day.
