🇸🇮 Ljubljana with kids · Slovenia

Ljubljana family guide

Ljubljana is a small, car-free capital where dragons guard the bridges and a funicular climbs to a hilltop castle. Children can walk almost everywhere, eat ice cream by the green Ljubljanica river and count dragons on lamp posts and drain covers. It also makes a calm base for day trips: Lake Bled with its island church is about an hour away, and Postojna Cave has its own underground train.

Top things to do in Ljubljana with kids

  1. Ljubljana Castle by funicular Ages 3+

Ride the glass funicular up in about a minute, climb the lookout tower for views towards the Alps and visit the puppet museum inside the castle walls.

  2. Dragon hunt and river boat Ages 3+

Count the four bronze dragons on Dragon Bridge, cross the Triple Bridge to Prešeren Square, then take a 45-60 minute boat ride along the Ljubljanica.

  3. Tivoli Park and Ljubljana Zoo Ages 3+

The city's big park has playgrounds, a pond and shady paths that lead uphill to the zoo on Rožnik hill, with giraffes, sea lions and a petting area.

  4. Lake Bled day trip Ages 4+

A bus from Ljubljana bus station takes about 1 hour 15 minutes; row or take a wooden pletna boat to the island, climb the 99 steps and ring the wishing bell, then share a Bled cream cake.

  5. Postojna Cave Ages 4+

An electric train carries you deep into the cave before a guided walk past giant stalactites and the olm, a pale cave salamander kids call the baby dragon.

Rainy-day and cold-day options

Mammoth skeleton, stuffed Alpine animals and minerals next to the National Museum.

Evening
Take a sunset boat ride on the Ljubljanica and eat ice cream on the riverbank.

Getting around

Food kids like

Try štruklji (rolled dumplings), Carniolan sausage, potica nut cake and burek; on spring to autumn Fridays the Open Kitchen street-food market at Pogačar Square is fun for families.

What Ljubljana costs for a family

About €150-230 a day for a family of four excluding lodging; a Postojna day adds roughly €100-150.

ItemTypical price
Castle ticket with funicular (adult; children about half)€14-20
Bus Ljubljana to Bled (one way, adult)€6-8
Pletna boat to Bled Island (adult return)€15-20
Postojna Cave entry (child to adult)€20-40

Walking up Castle Hill is free and takes about 15 minutes, and a picnic from the Central Market by the river saves a lot on lunch. Prices are typical ranges checked for 2025–2026; confirm current prices before you book.

Safety notes

  • Postojna Cave stays around 10 °C all year, so bring jackets and closed shoes even on a hot summer day.
  • Cyclists share the pedestrian centre and the riverside paths, so keep small children to one side and watch for bikes behind you.
  • Tap water is excellent and free public drinking fountains are common, but the Ljubljanica river itself is not for swimming.
