Sapporo family guide
Sapporo, on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, turns into a snow city every winter. In early February the Snow Festival fills Odori Park with sculptures as big as buildings, and kids slide down snow ramps at the family site. Warm underground walkways link the centre, steaming bowls of miso ramen wait in every street, and a day trip brings the famous penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo.
Create a Sapporo activity bookBest ages
Every age loves the snow play and sculptures, while ages 6-12 cope best with long cold days outside; babies are fine with warm layers and short outings.
Stroller
Packed snow and ice make strollers hard work outside in winter, but the Chi-ka-ho underground walkway from Sapporo Station to Odori and Susukino is smooth with lifts. Many local families use a carrier or a small sled.

Safety notes
- Pavements are often icy, so buy slip-on shoe spikes from a convenience store or drug store and teach kids to take small, flat penguin steps.
- Days are often around -5 to -10°C with wind, but shops and trains are very warm, so dress in layers that come off easily.
- Snow and icicles can slide off roofs without warning, so walk away from building edges after snowfall; tap water is safe to drink.
