Hoi An family guide
Hoi An is a small, walkable river town of yellow merchant houses, tailors and silk lanterns that glow every evening along the Thu Bon River. Families cycle out to vegetable gardens and coconut-palm waterways, spin in round basket boats and finish at the beach a few kilometres away. The old town is car-free for much of the day, which makes it one of Vietnam's gentler places to travel with children.
Create a Hoi An activity bookBest ages
Every age enjoys the lantern boats and basket boats. Children of 7 and up can ride their own bike to Tra Que or the beach on quiet lanes, while younger ones sit in the child seats most rental bikes offer.
Stroller
The old town's lanes are flat but narrow, crowded in the evening and often without proper pavements. A light stroller works in the morning; for evenings, markets and boats a carrier is easier.

Basket boats in Cam Thanh Ages 4+
In the coconut-palm waterway of Cam Thanh, local rowers spin round bamboo basket boats and show children how to catch crabs and make grass toys. Rides cost roughly 100,000-200,000 VND per person; skip the loud music stretches by asking for a quieter route.

- October and November bring heavy rain and river floods that can enter the old town, and the sea at An Bang is rough from October to February.
