Luang Prabang family guide
Luang Prabang is a quiet riverside town where saffron-robed monks walk at dawn, golden temples sit between French colonial houses and the day moves at a gentle pace. Families come for the turquoise pools of Kuang Si, a boat ride up the Mekong to caves full of Buddha statues and an easy night market. Most visits are three or four slow days, ideal after busier stops in Thailand or Vietnam.
Create a Luang Prabang activity bookBest ages
Children of 5 and up enjoy the waterfall pools, boats and bear rescue centre most. The town has no theme parks or big museums, so it suits families happy with slow days, and the March-May hot season is hard on small children.
Stroller
The peninsula's main streets are flat with pavements, but they are uneven and often broken. Mount Phousi has over 300 steps and Kuang Si has muddy, rooty paths, so a carrier is essential there.

Kuang Si Falls and the bear centre Ages 4+
Layered turquoise pools fall through the forest about 45 minutes from town, and some lower pools are open for swimming. The roughly 60,000 kip entry also covers the Free the Bears rescue centre at the gate, where children watch rescued moon bears play.
Sunset from Mount Phousi Ages 6+
Climb just over 300 steps to the small golden stupa on top for a view of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers at sunset. There is a small entry fee of a few tens of thousands of kip; go early, as the summit gets crowded.
Mekong boat to Pak Ou Caves Ages 5+
A long wooden boat chugs about two hours upriver to two caves packed with thousands of small Buddha statues. A private boat costs roughly 350,000-600,000 kip and children can watch fishermen and water buffalo along the banks.
Morning alms giving Ages 6+
At first light, long lines of monks walk the main street collecting sticky rice from kneeling locals. Watch quietly from across the road, never use flash and do not join in unless you follow local custom.
Night market on Sisavangvong Road Ages 3+
From late afternoon, red-roofed stalls fill the main street with weaving, toy elephants and hand-painted paper. Children can choose a small souvenir for well under 50,000 kip, and the side-alley buffet is cheap and cheerful.
Rainy-day and cold-day options
Royal Palace Museum
The former king's palace shows thrones, royal gifts and old cars in the garage.
Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre
A small, clear museum on Laos's ethnic groups, with costumes, toys and everyday objects children recognise.
Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre
Hands-on weaving and natural dyeing classes by the Mekong, with half-day options that suit older children.
A simple first day
- Morning
- Walk the peninsula to Wat Xieng Thong, the town's most beautiful temple, before the heat.
- Afternoon
- Rest by a pool, then wander along the Mekong's riverside cafes.
- Evening
- Climb Mount Phousi for sunset and walk down into the night market for dinner.
Getting around
The old town is easy to walk, with bikes for slightly longer hops and tuk-tuks for everything else; agree the fare first. The Laos-China Railway reaches Vientiane in about two hours, and tickets often sell out, so book early.
Food kids like
Sticky rice served in little woven baskets is a hit with children, as are khao jee baguette sandwiches, fruit shakes and khanom kok coconut pancakes. Luang Prabang's own khao soi is a mild pork and tomato noodle soup; restaurants close early and the town is quiet by 22:00.

Safety notes
- The Mekong and Nam Khan have strong currents, so swim only in Kuang Si's marked pools and make sure children wear life jackets on boats.
- Drink only bottled or filtered water, and use mosquito repellent at dawn and dusk, especially in the May-October rainy season.
- March to May is very hot and often smoky from field burning, which can bother children with asthma; November to February is cooler and clearer.
