Krabi family guide
Krabi is Thailand's Andaman coast at its most dramatic: tall limestone cliffs rising out of warm, calm water, longtail boats lined up on the sand and islands a short ride offshore. Families base in Ao Nang for easy beach days, take a boat to car-free Railay and spend an afternoon floating in a jungle pool. From November to April the sea is usually flat enough for toddlers.
Create a Krabi activity bookBest ages
Calm beaches and shallow water suit even toddlers in the dry season. Island tours, kayaking and snorkelling are best from about age 5 or 6, and the 1,260 steps of Tiger Cave Temple are only for strong older children.
Stroller
Ao Nang's beach road has a promenade, but pavements elsewhere are patchy and longtail boats mean wading through the shallows. Railay has sand paths and no roads, so a carrier is far more useful.

Longtail boat to Railay Ages 3+
A 15-minute longtail ride from Ao Nang beach reaches Railay, where children watch rock climbers and paddle at Phra Nang Cave Beach. Boats cost about 100-200 THB per person each way and leave when full.
Four Islands tour Ages 5+
A half- or full-day boat trip visits Poda Island, the sandbar at Tup Island that appears at low tide and the chicken-shaped rock of Chicken Island. Ask for child life jackets and pick a longtail tour for a shorter, gentler ride.
Emerald Pool and Hot Stream Waterfall Ages 4+
In the forest about an hour from Ao Nang, a boardwalk leads to a clear green pool for swimming; foreign adults pay about 200 THB. Nearby, warm spring water tumbles over rocks into shallow pools that children can sit in.
Kayaking at Ao Thalane Ages 6+
Paddle a two-seat kayak through mangrove channels and limestone canyons, watching for crab-eating macaques and mudskippers. Guided trips run with the tide and cost roughly 500-1,000 THB per person.
Krabi Town Walking Street Ages 3+
On weekend evenings the town centre becomes a night market with grilled snacks, coconut ice cream and small live music stages. Most snacks cost 20-60 THB, so children can graze their way along.
Rainy-day and cold-day options
Thai cooking class
Many Ao Nang schools welcome children to pound curry paste and cook a simple pad thai.
Batik painting workshop
Children paint a waxed outline of fish or elephants on cotton and take the cloth home.
Kids' Muay Thai lesson
Several Ao Nang gyms run short beginner classes in a covered ring that tire out energetic children.
A simple first day
- Morning
- Swim and build sandcastles at Ao Nang Beach while the light is soft.
- Afternoon
- Take a longtail to Railay and paddle at Phra Nang Cave Beach.
- Evening
- Watch the sunset over the islands and eat banana roti from a street stall.
Getting around
Krabi airport is about 30-40 minutes from Ao Nang by taxi or Grab. White songthaew pick-up taxis run between Ao Nang and Krabi Town, and longtail boats are the only way to reach Railay.
Food kids like
Children usually love fried rice, chicken satay, banana roti pancakes and mango sticky rice; ask for 'mai phet' (not spicy). Seafood dinners along Ao Nang's beachfront start around 18:00, and fresh coconuts are sold everywhere.

Safety notes
- From May to October monsoon swells bring strong currents and red flags, so follow beach flags and let tours cancel without arguing.
- Insist on properly fitting child life jackets on every boat, and use reef-safe sunscreen and rash guards, as the sun is fierce even on cloudy days.
- Monkeys at Railay and Tiger Cave Temple grab bags and drinks, so keep food hidden, and drink only bottled or filtered water.
