Macau family guide
Macau packs Portuguese squares, Chinese temples and a giant-panda house into a territory you can cross by bus in under an hour. Away from the casinos, families climb to the facade of St Paul's, eat egg tarts warm from the oven in Coloane village and look over the whole city from Macau Tower. It makes an easy two- or three-day add-on to Hong Kong, an hour away by bridge bus or ferry.
Create a Macau activity bookBest ages
Pandas, egg tarts and the tower suit every age, and children of 7 and up can follow the story of the old Portuguese trading port. Casino floors are closed to anyone under 21.
Stroller
Cotai, Taipa and the big hotels are flat with lifts everywhere. The historic centre has steep slopes, steps and slippery wavy-tile pavements around St Paul's and Monte Fort, where a carrier is easier.

Ruins of St Paul's and Senado Square Ages 4+
Walk across the black-and-white wave pavement of Senado Square and up the steps to the stone facade of St Paul's, all that is left of a church that burned in 1835. Then climb Monte Fort next door for cannons and a city view; the squares and facade are free.
Giant Panda Pavilion Ages 2+
In Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane, giant pandas and red pandas eat bamboo behind glass, and the park also has a small zoo and playgrounds. Entry costs about MOP 10, and mornings are when the pandas are most active.
Macau Tower observation deck Ages 4+
Ride a fast lift to the 58th-floor observation deck with glass floor panels and watch bungee jumpers drop past outside. Adult tickets cost roughly MOP 145-175 with reduced child prices.
Taipa Village and Rua do Cunha Ages 3+
This lane of free tasting samples, almond cookies and pork chop buns leads to pastel Portuguese houses along Avenida da Praia. It is a compact, shady walk with plenty of snack stops for small legs.
Coloane Village and Hac Sa Beach Ages 3+
Buy egg tarts at Lord Stow's Bakery, see the little yellow Chapel of St Francis Xavier, then dig in the dark sand of Hac Sa Beach. Tarts cost about MOP 10-15 each.
Rainy-day and cold-day options
Macao Science Center
A shiny cone-shaped building by the sea with hands-on galleries and a 3D planetarium.
Macao Grand Prix Museum
Racing cars, motorbikes and driving simulators telling the story of the city's street race.
Maritime Museum
Ship models, old fishing boats and a small aquarium opposite A-Ma Temple, with low ticket prices.
A simple first day
- Morning
- Walk from Senado Square up to St Paul's and Monte Fort before the crowds.
- Afternoon
- Take the bus to Coloane for egg tarts, the pandas and a play on Hac Sa Beach.
- Evening
- Watch the city lights from Macau Tower before dinner in Taipa Village.
Getting around
From Hong Kong, the bridge shuttle bus or TurboJET ferry takes about an hour. In Macau, buses with a Macau Pass card are cheap, the light rail links Taipa and Cotai, and taxis are reasonably priced but scarce at peak times.
Food kids like
Portuguese egg tarts, pork chop buns and almond cookies are easy favourites, and Macanese minchi, minced meat with fried potato, wins over fussy eaters. Dim sum and congee work for breakfast, and family dinners usually start around 19:00.
What Macau costs for a family

Safety notes
- Traffic drives on the left and the narrow old streets have little room, so hold hands on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and around the bus stops.
- St Paul's and Senado Square are packed at weekends and Chinese holidays, so agree a meeting point and put a phone number on younger children.
- Summers are hot and humid and typhoons can close attractions from July to September; the wave-pattern stone pavements get very slippery in rain.
