Okinawa family guide
Okinawa feels like a different Japan: warm sea, coral reefs, a slower island pace and food that mixes Japanese, Chinese and American influences. Families usually base in Naha for the castle, markets and monorail, then drive north for a day at the Churaumi Aquarium, where whale sharks glide past a glass wall taller than a house. Calm, shallow beaches make it easy with younger children.
Create a Okinawa activity bookBest ages
Toddlers and young children love the aquarium and the netted swimming beaches. Snorkelling trips to the Kerama Islands suit confident swimmers of about 6 and up, and most tour operators provide child-sized life jackets.
Stroller
Naha's Kokusai-dori, the monorail and the aquarium are stroller-friendly with lifts and ramps. Shurijo's stone paths are steep and beaches and ferries are not, so bring a carrier for those days.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Ages 2+
Watch whale sharks and manta rays in the huge Kuroshio Sea tank, then catch the free dolphin show outside in Ocean Expo Park. Tickets are ¥2,180 for adults, ¥710 for school-age children and free under 6; it is about two hours' drive north of Naha.
Kerama Islands day trip Ages 5+
High-speed ferries from Tomari Port reach Tokashiki or Zamami in roughly 35-50 minutes, landing near beaches with clear water and sea turtles. Book ahead and check the forecast, as sailings are cancelled in rough seas.
Shurijo Castle Park Ages 5+
The red palace of the old Ryukyu kings burned in 2019 and is being rebuilt, and visitors can watch the craftsmen at work. Gates, stone walls and viewpoints are free; the paid area costs ¥400 for adults and less for children.
Kouri Island Ages 3+
Drive across the 2 km Kouri Bridge over turquoise water to a small island with shallow beaches and the heart-shaped Heart Rock. It pairs easily with the aquarium day, which is about 30 minutes away.
Makishi Public Market and Kokusai-dori Ages 4+
Pick colourful fish on the ground floor of the market and have them cooked upstairs, then walk Kokusai-dori for shisa figures and Blue Seal ice cream. Expect about ¥1,500-3,000 per person for a market meal.
Rainy-day and cold-day options
DMM Kariyushi Aquarium
A modern, compact aquarium near the airport with touch pools, sloths and colourful reef fish under one roof.
Okinawa World and Gyokusendo Cave
Walk a lit underground path through stalactites, then watch an Eisa drum show in the covered village.
Okinawa Prefectural Museum
Ryukyu history, sea fossils and a hands-on discovery room in Naha's Omoromachi district.
A simple first day
- Morning
- Ride the monorail to Shuri and walk the castle walls while it is still cool.
- Afternoon
- Head back to Kokusai-dori for lunch at Makishi Public Market and a Blue Seal ice cream.
- Evening
- Watch the sunset at Naminoue Beach in Naha, a short taxi ride away, before an early dinner.
Getting around
The Yui Rail monorail links Naha Airport with Kokusai-dori and Shuri, and is simple with children. For the aquarium and northern beaches a rental car is easiest, taking about two hours on the expressway; otherwise use the Yanbaru Express bus.
Food kids like
Okinawa soba has thick wheat noodles in a mild pork broth that most children like, and taco rice and sata andagi doughnuts are easy wins. Many restaurants serve dinner from about 17:00, and families often eat early to beat the queues.

Safety notes
- The sun is strong even in spring, so use rash guards and hats and plan beach time for mornings and late afternoons.
- Box jellyfish appear from about June to September, so swim only at beaches with jellyfish nets and lifeguards and follow posted flags.
- Typhoons can hit from July to October and stop ferries and flights, so keep flexible days; if you drive, cars keep left and under-6s must use a child seat.
